Andreas Embiricos: Photographs never shown before

Eleftheria Tseliou Gallery, in its first exhibition at its temporary, second location in Athens at Tositsa 3, and as part of the historical exhibitions it has launched at the gallery since 2016, presents 54 photographs, exhibited for the first time, by the great poet, photographer and psychoanalyst Andreas Embiricos.

The exhibition coincides with the 50-year anniversary of his death.

The photographs were taken between 1952 and 1962. The unique prints that were made were printed under the supervision of Andreas Embiricos at the studio of Thanasis Iliadis and bear on the back handwritten notes by the artist, where he cites the location, date, camera (where C-Contax, N-Nikon, L-Leica, R-Rolleiflex, and L.E. indicates Leonidas Embiricos) and film number. These notes serve as the exhibition’s captions.

The exhibition Andreas Embiricos: Photographs never shown before is curated by George Hadjimichalis who, in collaboration with Leonidas Embiricos and Milagros Arano, selected the photographs presented. The exhibition also presents Iannis Ganas’ Often at night (2004), which refers to Andreas Embiricos’ poem of the same title, as well as a sound clip of the poet reciting his poem The Shutter.

This exhibition would not have been possible without the unequivocal help and support of Leonidas Embiricos.
